Name: Encyclopedia of the Chicago Literary Renaissance: The Essential Guide to the Lives and Works of the Chicago Renaissance Writers
Author: Jan Pinkerton, Randolph H. Hudson
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2004
ISBN: 0816048983
Number of pages: 426

Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 2.37 MB

Covering the Chicago literary scene from 1880 to 1930, this is the second volume in Facts On File's series on various American literary movements and the writers, books, events, people, and places associated with them.

Most entries are one paragraph in length, but major writers have two- or three-page articles. Important books, such as Sister Carrie, also have longer articles that analyze and summarize the work. All of the articles include cross-references to related entries and, where appropriate, recommended books for further reading. Scattered throughout are black-and-white drawings and photographs, but since many of the included authors are little known today, more photographs would have been helpful. At the end of the book is a list of the major authors and their works, a chronology of events in Chicago, and a detailed index.

Besides authors and works, coverage is given to places, buildings, and events that are of "primary or ancillary importance to students of the Chicago Renaissance," but the explanation of why they have been included is not always clear. The article on the Rookery Building explains why it is one of the finest examples of modern architecture, and it also points out that Frank Norris set part of his novel The Pit in the building. Yet the entry on Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church says only that it was the first African American church in Chicago. How or why it relates to the Chicago literary renaissance is never explained. Similarly, post-Chicago renaissance writers such as Gwendolyn Brooks, James T. Farrell, and Saul Bellow are covered in short entries, but these entries do not explain how such writers were influenced by the renaissance writers.

Despite this caveat, the book is an excellent source that introduces students to an important literary movement. This is a major new reference title that academic and public libraries with literature collections will want to purchase. High-school libraries in the Midwest will also find it very helpful to their students.

Name: Encyclopedia of Women's History in America
Author: Kathryn Cullen-Dupont
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2000
ISBN: 0816041008
Number of pages: 418
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 3,73 MB

In this treatment of U.S. women's history, Cullen-Dupont (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Facts on File, 1992, a YA biography) presents over 500 entries for significant events, legislative acts, court cases, organizations, individuals, and publications. Inclusion, though unpredictable, tends to favor specific named groups rather than general concepts (e.g., Operation Rescue and Roe v. Wade; nothing under abortion), and reflects the diversity of women's backgrounds and experience in the United States. Less comprehensive than Angela Zophy's Handbook of American Women's History (LJ 3/1/90), particularly concerning women's occupations and other topics in U.S. social history, this work lacks the advantage of Zophy's specialist contributors. Its emphasis is less biographical than Doris Weatherford's American Women's History (Prentice, 1994); unlike the Weatherford title, it has no illustrations but does include suggested readings after each entry, an extensive bibliography, an appendix of 34 documents, and an index (not seen). Also on the plus side are Cullen-Dupont's engaging prose style, enlivened by frequent quotes from primary sources, and good coverage of recent topics, including entries for Anita Hill, Camille Paglia, "glass ceiling," the Violence Against Women Act (1994), and Harris v. Forklift Systems. An attractive and useful purchase for high school and public libraries, and a good, reasonably priced second choice, after Zophy's work, for academic libraries.?Carolynne Myall, Eastern Washington Univ. Libs., Cheney

Name: A Concise Encyclopedia of Hinduism
Author: Klaus K. Klostermaier
Publisher: Oneworld Publications
Publication date: 1998-11-25
ISBN: 1851681752
Number of pages: 288
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 3.37 MB

History has always been a problematic issue in India, where the dating of many a figure is accurate to only within centuries. So to attempt a definitive history of Hinduism would seem foolhardy. Klaus Klostermaier approximated the impossible in his 715-page Survey of Hinduism, and now he has boiled it all down to about half that size. Hinduism is defined as that family of religions that accept the Vedas as authoritative, but despite the single moniker the differences can be vast. From fertility cults to precise rituals that date back thousands of years, Klostermaier cuts across time to illustrate the major strains of Hindu tradition--Vaisnavism, Saivism, and Saktism, along with the nonsectarian smarta. He includes a short history of Hindu philosophy, which in India is inseparable from religion. Klostermaier is a first-rate scholar who expects a lot from his readers, sometimes too much. Anyone who isn't somewhat versed in Hinduism already would do well to pick up his Concise Encyclopedia of Hinduism for handy reference. --Brian Bruya

Name: Encyclopedia of the Harlem Literary Renaissance
Author: Lois Brown
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2005
ISBN: 081604967X
Number of pages: 612
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 4.46 MB

Encyclopedia of the Harlem Literary Renaissance is the latest publication in the Facts on File Literary Movements set. (The other four volumes cover gothic literature, science fiction writers, pulp fiction writers, and the Chicago Literary Renaissance). Author Brown is an associate professor of English with a specialty in African American Studies. Her introduction explains the phenomenon of the Harlem Renaissance and describes recent advances in scholarship, including greater access to primary writings and "Harlem Renaissance-related feminist recovery."

The volume has more than 800 alphabetically arranged entries, most including a short bibliography of further reading. The entries do not cover writers and their works exclusively. Many of the most interesting entries are for educational institutions, such as Fisk University in Nashville, and African American newspapers and magazines, such as The Crisis, 0 edited by W. E. B. DuBois. Brown also includes places (Chicago, Cotton Club, Greenwich Village); organizations and institutions (African Black Brotherhood, New York Public Library, Young Men's Christian Association); events (First World War, Great Depression, Scottsboro trial); and various other topics related to the movement (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.; Julius Rosenwald Fellowship; Howard University Players). Length ranges from a sentence or two to five for major figures such as DuBois and Jessie Redmon Fauset. The volume is well researched, drawing on letters, diaries, and collected works as well as secondary sources, such as biographies and literary criticism.

Following the introduction is a map of Harlem with places of interest noted and numbered. Other features include a selected bibliography of works by leading Harlem Renaissance figures, a chronology, and a bibliography of secondary sources. Although there is overlap with other sources, such as Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance, published by Facts On File in 2003, this is a worthwhile purchase for public, high-school, and undergraduate collections.

Name: Encyclopedia of Networked and Virtual Organizations
Author: Goran D. Putnik, Maria Manuela Cunha
Publisher: Information Science Reference
Publication date: 2008
ISBN: 159904885X
Number of pages: 1915
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 18 MB

The virtual enterprise as a new organizational paradigm has three fundamental features: dynamics of network reconfiguration, virtuality, and external entities as environments for enabling or supporting the virtual enterprise integration as well as reconfiguration dynamics. The field of knowledge on this topic is highly fragmented due to the inexistence of a transfer of knowledge between regions, developers, and researchers.

The Encyclopedia of Networked&Virtual Organizations documents the most relevant contributions to the introduction of networked, dynamic, agile, and virtual organizational models; definitions; taxonomies; opportunities; and reference models and architectures. These volumes pool the existing works, approaches, solutions, and needs of the virtual enterprise research community to create a repository of the main developments regarding the virtual organization, compiling definitions, characteristics, comparisons, advantages, practices, enabling technologies, and best practices.
